you found the wood-speed wifi
Welcome home, family ๐
You're on the wifi now. It's wood-speed โ slow on purpose โ so grab what you need and pass it on. The whole camp's sharing one little signal out here. Be gentle with it.
First things first, though: text your mom. Tell her you made it. She's been wondering. ๐
โ wifi.mom
You connected to a network called wifi.tree. There's no cell tower out here and no cafรฉ with a password. Somebody at the gathering hauled a signal into the wild โ a Starlink dish, a hotspot, something โ and they're sharing it with everyone, for free. That somebody is a wifi.mom.
It means deliberately slow. One dish is feeding the whole camp, so the speed is capped to keep it fair. It's plenty for messaging your people, checking the map, and posting that you made it in โ and useless for streaming or hogging. That's the point. ๐ข
When you joined, you grew a leaf. It's your ticket online, and it stays fresh for a few hours before it gently falls. When it does, just grow a new one โ there's no limit on kindness.
The leaf's a little reminder that this is shared, living bandwidth. Other folks are on the same tree. Leaves dry up. Data runs out. So โ be kind, keep it light. ๐ฟ
Somebody at this gathering packed in a satellite dish and a tiny device, out of their own pocket, running free and open-source software, just so the rest of camp could find each other. If you figure out who โ say thanks. Maybe share your snacks.
Got a Starlink or a hotspot and somewhere to point it? You can be the wifi.mom next time. A tree runs on a $10 chip, sips battery, and sets up in about five minutes.
